“White specks in dog poop” is not a funny issue, but an indicator of their health or physical condition. It is very important to check out if there is any unexpected thing in your dog poop. White specks can be harmful or harmless. Check for movement of the specks. If the white specks are moving, it is harmful and can be a serious matter for the dog. Why are there white spots in my dog’s poop?

White specks in poop mean tiny or small white dots or seeds in a dog’s potty or stool. Sometimes white specks do not cause any serious effect or are a common issue. But in some cases, it can cause a dangerous or infectious effect on your dog.

Usually a healthy dog’s poop color should be chocolate brown. In some cases, you may notice white seeds look like rice in dog’s poop. There are various causes for white specks in dog poop. Some of the causes are-

Dog poop with small white seeds that are not moving means it is a harmless matter. It is not a worm or parasite. It could be-

  • Bones traces or undigested food: the dog may have grains, rice, tiny bones, undigested food or foreign particles in their stool.
  • Undigested medication capsule.
  • Fly eggs or larvae: when the poop is left exposed in an open place for a while, fly larvae or eggs have been laid in it.

Small white seeds that are moving in a dog poop means they may be harmful to your pet. You should take it in account if you notice moving white specks in your pet’s poop.

  • Parasites or other infections: this is a matter of concern that can cause a serious condition. Worms are parasites that are raided in a dog’s intestines. Worms cause a pernicious effect on a dog’s health condition. 

What are the symptoms that confirm that the dog has worms

  • Change activity: if you notice any change in your dog’s appearance, decrease activity- energy, lethargy, worms are the reason behind these changes. 
  • Weight loss: worms can cause serious weight loss in your dog. As worms eat nutrients from the dog’s body. 
  • Diarrhea: diarrhea is the primary symptom. The intestinal worm can cause diarrhea (watery, bloody) in your dog. Blood can also appear in the dog’s stool.
  • Vomiting
  • Dehydration

Types of worms

Some common types of worms found in dog’s poop: 

  • What do tapeworms look like in dog poop?: Sometimes tapeworm can be seen in dog poop. These parasites cause a dog’s intestinal infection. Tapeworms absorb nutrients from the host’s body. It lays its eggs in the dog’s entrails. The dog usually licks its private body part more often, it’s another sign of having worms.  
  • Hookworms in dog poop: hookworms can penetrate the skin. They eat dog’s blood and cause harm to the dog’s intestine. Hookworms can cause blood loss or anemia in dogs. Weight loss, lethargy, pale gums are the symptoms of having hookworms.
  • Roundworm in dog poop: there can be roundworm in dog poop. This can happen when the dog eats rotted food or spoils the soil and feces of another animal. Vomiting, diarrhea are the signs of having this type of worm.
  • Whipworms in dog poop: this type of parasite or worm can not be identified easily. Whipworms are so dangerous for a dog that they cause bloody diarrhea in the dog. This can be a deadly parasite for your dog.

White specks in dog poop after deworming

After deworming, it takes about 12-16 hours to be effective on the parasites. In some cases, the dog will poop with worms continuously for a couple of days to eliminate all the worms from its body.

After deworming, if white specks in dog stool or poop are moving and are bright white in color, that means deworming medication has not worked. You need to provide another medication to your dog. There are many drugs or dewormers for your dog to get rid of the worms. Consult with the vet and switch to another type of dewormer. Do not administer too many drugs at a time, this can cause physical discomfort to your dog.

Sometimes there can be white specks in dog poop after eating rice. These can be grains or rice. Rice is very effective for dog’s stomach problems. In cases of diarrhea, rice helps to tan the stool. After eating rice this can happen that rice was not digested properly. And undigested rice is coming out of the body through the alimentary system of the dog.

Treatment at home

If white specks are not worms, there is nothing to worry about. But you need a little change in your dog’s diet chart.

Provide him properly cooked plain rice and grains. Do not give your dog spoiled or rotted food to eat but more fresh meat than bone meal. Bone meal can cause GIT irritation.

Treatment from vet

Check white specks in dog poop. If the white specks are moving, they are worms. This is a matter of concern. Contact the vat immediately. Deworm your pet to get rid of the worms. 

Provide an effective medication as prescribed to your dog.

Final thoughts

Diagnose and examine the dog’s stool to identify worms. The worm is the reason why you need to be more serious about the white specks in the dog poop issue. Early deworming helps to prevent worms. A healthy diet will help to improve the physical condition of the dog. Contact the vet for your pet’s regular check-up.
